Russian has been taught in Glasgow since 1917, when a lectureship was founded and endowed by Sir William Weir (later Lord Weir of Eastwood). The teaching of Polish was added in 1943, with lectureships in Czech and Polish established in 1949 and the Chair of Slavonic Languages and Literatures in 1974. Located in one of the University's newer buildings (completed in 1984), which also houses a modern Language Centre with the most up-to-date equipment for the teaching and learning of foreign languages, the Department is now acknowledged as a centre of excellence in the field of Slavonic Studies.
